The Vantage was introduced in 1992, four years after the introduction of the Virage. The Vantage was a different Aston; only the door and roof skin panels were carried over.
The Virage name was dropped in favour of Vantage and later V8 Vantage; both not be confused with the AM Vantage (1972-73) and V8 Vantage (1977-89).
The stylist Ken Greenley together with Project Manager, Mike Booth, improved on the original styling by John Heffernan. Changes to the Virage were extensive, but nothing compared to the engine.
The original 5.34 litre V8 engine was given twin Eaton Roots superchargers, generating 550 [bhp] and 550 [lbft] of torque, becoming the most powerful production power plant in the world.
This new engine propelled the Vantage from 0 to 96 [km/h] in 4.6 seconds, from 0 to 160 [km/h] in 10.1 seconds and achieving an official top speed of 300 [km/h]. In its day, it was the fastest Aston Martin road car ever.
To stop the Vantage weighing 1990 [kg], massive 362 [mm] diameter ventilated discs and four piston AP Racing callipers were fitted to the front; the largest fitted to a road car, at the time.
Other changes were new 18 inch light alloy wheels, two groups of three headlamps, openings in the front wings, round rear lamps and a lower silhouette. This interior was luxurious and functional.
A total of 239 standard Vantages had been produced from 1992 to 1999. Once the production of the V8 ended in late 2000, the days of coach built Astons were over for good.
