Fabulously illustrated history - includes much use of showroom sales brochures. The Bugatti name is synonymous with quality, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that most books about this storied marque are equally extraordinary.
Consequently, the most dramatic Bugatti book ever published is this wonderful work written by the two most renowned experts on the subject, Hugh Conway and Jacques Greilsamer. While there had been many books published on Bugatti before this was book produced back in 1978, this is certainly the first of its kind to be done in a very upscale way.
From its textured hardcover finished in Bugatti blue, this large landscape style book measures 235 x 315 mm, totals 280 full-color pages in length, and comes well protected in a cardboard sleeve illustrated by famed auto artist Walter Gotschke. The paper quality and printing is first class for its day.
Basically the book is simply a model-by-model showcase, with each Bugatti model made given an eight- to ten-page spread. Several period sepia-tone photographs complement several full-color beauty shots, with most taking up the whole right side pages. The text is limited, focusing mainly on the car's mechanical composition, and is shown in both English and French.
While this is clearly not the most in-depth Bugatti book ever published, with many other more recent books specializing in specific models that are clearly more insightful and informative with a greater depth of historical and mechanical details, it's nice to have a single volume in the library that covers most of what you need to know about a particular marque so you can get a full appreciation of its history in a single sitting.
For that this book serves well. The production chart is especially interesting as it shows how many of each model were originally built, how many exist today as per 1978 information and in which countries they are located.
Fine copy. Some light general wear to slipcase. Pages very good. This is the first edition. The second printing was published in 1982. Either version is a keeper, providing you with hours of informative insight to all the different road and competition Bugatti models produced.
